Quarterback Ty Simpson took over the starting job and looked like a legitimate SEC starter in Week 1’s win over Louisiana-Monroe. Simpson threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns in a game he only played the first half of. His footwork looks cleaner, and his velocity has improved noticeably from spring.
The offense has weapons everywhere. Running back Justice Haynes is one of the best returning backs in the SEC. Ryan Williams is a preseason All-American at wide receiver. Germie Bernard has bounced back from an injury-plagued 2025. Tight end Josh Cuevas is a matchup problem.
Defense has been the real question. Alabama lost several key contributors to the NFL and has had to rebuild the front seven. Freshman five-star LB Andrew Hines has already earned starting reps. Defensive line coach Freddie Roach has been rotating four guys inside trying to find the right combination.
East Carolina is 1-0 after opening with a win over NC State. Head coach Blake Harrell has quietly built a competitive program in Greenville, and the Pirates return a veteran quarterback in Katin Houser who came over from Michigan State via the transfer portal. This is not a nothing game.
The betting line is Alabama minus 34.5 with a total of 55. Sharp bettors have hit the total under, betting that Alabama’s defense will not allow more than 14 points and that DeBoer will pull his starters early to protect them for next week’s SEC opener against Vanderbilt.
Fan expectations in Tuscaloosa are complicated. Alabama fans have watched programs like Georgia and Ohio State reload without missing a beat, and the assumption is that a top-tier program should never have a rebuilding year. DeBoer is fighting that expectation every single week.
Kickoff is at noon Eastern on ABC. Alabama should win comfortably, but the film after the game will tell the real story of whether year two of the DeBoer era is starting to look like the standard Crimson Tide product.
