Dabo Swinney Getting Roasted Again: What the Clemson Coach Just Said About the Portal
Dabo Swinney is doing it again. After Clemson got blown out by LSU in the season opener, the Clemson head coach was asked about roster building in the modern era, and he went right back to his greatest hits about the transfer portal and NIL.
Fans noticed immediately. Every single reply, every single quote-tweet, every single message board thread said the exact same thing. Dabo needs to stop complaining and start using the tools everyone else uses, or Clemson is going to keep falling behind.
The frustration is fair. Swinney has been the most public holdout on the transfer portal since it opened up college football. He has said, on the record, that he prefers building through high school recruiting and developing players over four years. It is a beautiful ideal, and it worked spectacularly for a while.
It is not working anymore. Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Alabama, and even upstart programs like SMU and Miami have used the portal to plug holes and add instant impact. Clemson still gets top-15 recruiting classes, but the talent gap in the trenches is real and it showed up on Saturday against LSU.
The larger issue is that Swinney’s public comments make him sound out of touch. Coaches like Kirby Smart have adapted. Coaches like Ryan Day have adapted. Even Nick Saban, before he retired, embraced the portal and NIL as reality. Swinney keeps trying to fight both.
His argument, when you strip it down, is that college football should still be about student-athletes and long-term development. There is real merit to that argument. There is also the small matter of the scoreboard, and the scoreboard says Clemson is no longer in the national title conversation.
Athletic director Graham Neff has to be watching this closely. Swinney is a Clemson legend. His name is on the football complex. Firing him would be almost unthinkable in Clemson circles, and probably financially prohibitive with his buyout.
But at some point, the losses pile up. Clemson has not made the College Football Playoff in the four-team era’s later years, has not sniffed a national title game since 2019, and is now getting doubled up by conference-adjacent rivals on national television.
Fans have finally reached the same thing every year stage of frustration. If Swinney does not adapt to the modern game, and fast, this fan base is going to move from grumbling to demanding change. Dabo is still one of the great characters in the sport. He is also running out of runway.
