Colin Cowherd Has Message For Ohio State Football Fans

Colin Cowherd has a message for Ohio State football fans.

His message? Shut up.

Clemsonโ€™s victory over the Buckeyes on Saturday night did not come without a fair share of controversy.

A lot of Ohio State fans came out of the outing with the feeling that the referees botched the Fiesta Bowl.

In Cowherdโ€™s opinion, this sort of thinking is incorrect. He believes that fans should stop blaming the referees and start blaming their teamโ€™s defense.

If Ohio Stateโ€™s defense had been able to slow Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence down, Cowherd says, this whole conversation would be moot.

โ€œYou could not stop Trevor Lawrence and could not make the play when it mattered,โ€ Cowherd said.

โ€œThat decides Super Bowls. That decides National Championships.โ€

The main reason Buckeyes fans are so angry this week is because of a targeting call and a fumble recovery that they believe swayed the outcome of the game.

Is their outrage justified? It is clearly a matter of personal opinion at this point.

  1. Part of the point is that Ohio State’s defense DID step up throughout the game, and some of their biggest plays were overturned – including one that would have given them 7 points…

He needs to admit that the officiating screwed up. Then, he can yell that it doesn’t matter, because the game is over, now.

    1. Makes the catch takes 4 steps gains 2 yards. How in the world is that not a catch? If OSU DB never touched him he would still be holding the ball next week. You always here about momentum swings but the talking heads don’ t seem to think that would apply here. So much for defence wins championships. The real football play was the DB’s punch out after the catch and the scoop and score. What a great play!!!

    2. Exactly. The referees did everything they could to take the wind out of Ohio state’s sales, and give the game to Clemson. They blew the calls severely no matter what anyone says weather it was for money or personal reasons. Regardless of the fact that it doesn’t matter anymore. It still matters to the buckeye players that put their heart into that game and will have to remember this for rest of there lives. As well as their fan base. May the talking heads reap their big mouth heartless rewards sometime in the near future. And may our ex Buckeye brother Joe lay waste to the much deserved Clemson team in the Natty.

  2. Colin Cowherd wants Ohio State fans – and for that matter OSU Coach Day and AD Smith – to shut because (1) the outcome of the game is what he wanted and (2) if Ohio State officials elect to pursue the matter, that will shine a glaring spotlight on the critical mistakes of the SEC officials. The latter, of course, will taint Clemson’s victory. Also, going forward, any reforms that result in stricter guidelines on how officials must referee various issues, e.g. targeting, possession after a catch, etc., will restrict officials’ leeway in the future. When the status quo produces results Cowherd likes, well, no need for any changes. If the situation had been reversed and Ohio State had been the beneficiary of highly questionable calls, well now that would be a different story.

  3. It’s unfortunate that the poor officiating in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl leaves a lot of doubt at to which team was truly superior. In either case, Clemson or The Ohio State, LSU will be hard to defeat. Most likely, Clemson will be shown to be the inferior team it really was and is. The SEC officials won’t be able to join Clemson’s huddle in the championship game. I look forward to the Clemson disaster and an unlikely apology from the SEC officials.

  4. This year’s playoffs showed a lot of controversial official’s calls or non-calls. I think the rules committee need to address the clear intentions of the rules. Not only the fans seemed to be confused by the intent of the rules but the officials seemed to distort the rules to justify untimely calls or no-calls.

  5. Ummm…mr. cowherd, if you saw the same game the rest of the nation saw…that buckeye defense defense did stop lawrence and that was called targeting. They stopped them all again, causing a fumble and take a lead that oribably would have given the bucks the win. So quit sitting up on your high and mighty wellpaid espn office and tells us to shut up. Because until espn admits that the refs did screw up, we will not shut up. Oh, and by the way, did you see all the other targeting in other games that was not called into review? Why? Because it was football…a good hitting game. Lawrence milked that to get the call and you all know it.
