Bill Belichick’s move to North Carolina has surprised many in the football world.
The legendary coach agreed to a five-year deal with the University of North Carolina, marking a significant shift from his NFL career.
Belichick’s contract reportedly includes provisions that could allow for an NFL return, though he has firmly denied any such intentions.
Belichick’s deal is for three years, $30 million. He also has a buyout option of $10 million. The right NFL team would certainly give that number some thought if they felt like they needed the future Hall of Famer.
Additionally, the buyout number drops to $1 million on June 1, 2025. That is less than half a year away.
When asked about all this, Belichick was his usual brand of cagey.
“Jim, you know I don’t discuss contracts,” Belichick said during an interview. “… I’m here at North Carolina, I want to be at Carolina, and I’m excited about being at Carolina.”
“Have you left the door open that perhaps at some point in your life you’ll be back in the NFL?”

Belichick was asked during the same interview whether he believed an NFL opportunity could have loomed if he had held out and not accepted the UNC job.
“Sure I think there would’ve been some interest, but in the end, really, it’s not about what could’ve been or would’ve been, it’s about the opportunity at North Carolina. I just think this program is in the right spot now to take off,” Belichick said.
“Chancellor Roberts and the board of trustees have made a strong commitment toward football at North Carolina and I’m here with Mike Lombardi as our general manager to do all we can to accelerate that process. And we’re gonna get the team, make it as competitive as we can as soon as we can.”
