USC starting quarterback Caleb Williams may be the favorite to win this year’s Heisman Trophy, but he is having something of a rough week.
First, he got hurt in the Pac-12 Championship Game. His injury, by all accounts, is legitimately severe. Then his squad lost the game and, in the process, their shot at the College Football Playoff.
As if all that wasn’t bad enough, Williams also managed to irk a large segment of the college football-watching world with his mocking of TCU quarterback Max Duggan.
Duggan’s Horned Frogs suffered a painful 31-28 overtime loss to Kansas State over the weekend. Understandably, he was very emotional after the fact because he was worried it would keep his squad out of the College Football Playoff. (It didn’t.)
Robert Griffin III tweeted this out in response to Duggan’s show of emotion:
How can you not root for Max Duggan? pic.twitter.com/KI3DJNSX4w

Williams responded with this now-deleted tweet:
@CALEBcsw thinks he’s slick deleting the tweet pic.twitter.com/TircC3MZCm

Understandably, the backlash was swift.
The responses to Williams’ act were not especially kind:
That’s funny coming from a guy who cry’s like a baby every time he loses at usc and Oklahoma.

Caleb don’t forgot your nail polish, you hypocrite. I felt sorry for you getting hurt, but you truly are classless

As a result, Williams had to come out and address the controversy. He did so with this message:
Wasn’t laughing at Max D!! Happy for him, his journey, his team, and his passion for his school. I feel the same way after we lost this year.
With us athletes we put in so much work and so passionate about our work that it’s hurts to not achieve what you worked so hard for!!!

Fans were not overly-sympathetic.
The reactions were telling:
I’m only sharing this because Caleb Williams deleted these Tweets and RG3’s response is perfect.
Paint your nails “F*** Utah” before the game, cry and hide after losing, quote Kobe in the post-game press conference, and now this.

But ya gotta understand the connotation your tweet had right? As a TCU fan, you win the heisman, you had the better season. But it sounds like you’re doggin on Max who I believe has the utmost respect for you, who you even beat your very first start last year.

Williams should know better than anyone what it is like to be scrutinized. This is a guy who had to deal with, not only a teammate beef back at Oklahoma, but also some sorority girls outing him for his alleged foot fetish.
You would understand that would make someone more sensitive to others’ emotional plight, not less.
But alas, that is not the case.

In any event, Duggan is still headed to the College Football Playoff. Williams is not.
Will Duggan be able to get the ultimate last word with a National Championship victory?
Time will tell.
