Is Bryce Underwood's Job Safe? Kyle Whittingham Just Put Michigan's QB on Notice

Kyle Whittingham did not bench Bryce Underwood on Monday. He did something that gets a quarterback’s attention faster.

Asked how secure Underwood is in Michigan’s starting job, the first-year Wolverines head coach made clear the answer has an expiration date.

“He’s our QB right now. It’s not something that’s infinite. At some point, we’ve got to turn a corner and we’ve got to see improvement,” Whittingham said. “As we do with a bunch of stuff, we’ve got to see improvement out of the coaches. It’s not just on Bryce. It’s not just Bryce’s job that is not absolutely set in concrete.”

He added: “Nobody’s is. You’ve got to perform week in and week out. Become somebody that we feel is playing at a level that we can win with.”

The opener was bad enough to warrant it

Michigan escaped Western Michigan 13-12, and the word escaped is doing a lot of work. The Wolverines needed a game-winning Hail Mary after officials put one second back on the clock, a decision that has spent the last three days being argued about across college football.

Underwood threw for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception. His 52.9 QBR ranked near the bottom of Big Ten starters in Week 1. Against a MAC opponent, at home, in the Big House.

That is not a quarterback who lost his job. It is a quarterback whose coach cannot pretend the performance was acceptable.

The money makes this louder

Underwood was the No. 1 overall recruit in the country and Michigan paid an enormous sum to land him. That number gets cited every time he has a modest game, and it will keep getting cited until he plays like the best player on the field.

That is unfair to a 19-year-old, and it is also the deal he signed up for. Record NIL money buys record scrutiny. Nobody in the sport gets one without the other anymore.

He has not been bad. He has been fine, and fine is not what Michigan bought.

Whittingham is doing this on purpose

Whittingham took over the program in December after building Utah into a program that consistently outperformed its recruiting. His entire coaching identity is accountability applied evenly, and he made a point of saying the coaches need to improve too.

That is the tell. This was not a shot at Underwood. It was a public statement that nothing carries over from the previous staff, including reputations and recruiting rankings.

Who is behind him?

True freshman Tommy Carr, the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, is the backup. He had an impressive spring, and he is also a true freshman, which means Michigan is not turning to him unless Underwood collapses entirely.

So the pressure is real but the threat is theoretical. Underwood has time. What he does not have is permission to keep throwing for 170 yards.
