Bill Belichick’s Second Chance: North Carolina vs TCU in Dublin Is His Redemption Game
Bill Belichick’s second college football season begins in Dublin, and it begins against TCU. That is not an accident.
The North Carolina head coach lost his opener last year to TCU in Chapel Hill. It was ugly. The Horned Frogs jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead, held on for a 42-31 win, and set the tone for what became a disappointing 6-6 debut year for Belichick.
Now UNC gets a rematch, this time in Aviva Stadium as part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Week 0. Belichick has been circling this game since the schedule dropped.
Why This Game Matters
Belichick came to college football with the biggest name in coaching. Six Super Bowl rings. The greatest defensive mind of his generation. He was supposed to walk into Chapel Hill and turn the Tar Heels into a contender overnight.
Year one was a mess. He was learning NIL. He was learning the transfer portal. He was learning that college kids do not respond to Bill Belichick’s coaching style the way NFL veterans do.
Year two has to be different. He has had a full offseason to rebuild the roster in his image. He has a real quarterback in Jake Retzlaff, the former BYU transfer. He has the deepest linebacker group in the ACC.
Losing to TCU again in the opener, in Ireland, on national television, would be a disaster he cannot recover from.
What TCU Brings
The Horned Frogs are ranked in the preseason top 20 for a reason. Sonny Dykes has quietly built one of the more consistent programs in the Big 12. Quarterback Josh Hoover is entering his third year as the starter and coming off a season with 3,800 passing yards and 28 touchdowns.
TCU has more experience than UNC on both sides of the ball. They have played in an actual Big 12 conference schedule. They know how to travel and win.
Belichick’s group is going to be tested from the opening drive.
The Belichick Adjustment
The biggest question about Belichick in college is whether he can develop players. His NFL career was built on schemes and preparation. In the pros, you already had the talent. Your job was to put them in the right spot.
In college, you have to teach fundamentals. You have to convince 19-year-olds to buy into a system that is more complex than most NFL playbooks. You have to recruit players who might leave in the portal after one year.
Belichick has spent the offseason simplifying his schemes. He has hired younger position coaches to handle the day-to-day player development. He has embraced NIL after resisting it for months.
All of that is being tested on August 30 in Dublin.
Prediction
UNC wins in a close one. The offense will be better with Retzlaff and a full year of Belichick installing his system. The defense will be significantly better with the additions from the portal.
Expect a 27-24 game where a late field goal wins it. Retzlaff throws for 280 yards and a couple of scores. UNC’s defense gets a key stop in the fourth quarter to seal it.
If Belichick wins this game, the whole narrative around him in Chapel Hill changes. The recruiting class for 2027 gets a boost. The season expectations move from 6-6 to 8-4 or better.
If he loses, the questions about whether he can actually coach college football get louder. And they will not stop until he wins big.
Dublin is the first checkpoint. Belichick has to deliver.
