Auburn Dismisses Star Linebacker Xavier Atkins: What His Transfer Portal Statement Means

Auburn has dismissed Xavier Atkins, the best defensive player on its roster, three days after beating the No. 1 team in the country without him.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the dismissal early Tuesday morning, citing sources who told him it happened Monday night. Auburn has not issued a statement. Head coach Alex Golesh has not addressed it. The only on-the-record word from anybody involved came from Atkins himself, in a post on X a few hours later.
What Atkins Said
“I have nothing but respect Auburn University and will continue to support my teammates this season,” Atkins wrote, in the statement as transcribed by ClutchPoints. “My focus is on my health, my family, and on finishing up the academic semester strong, and I’ll be entering the transfer portal at the appropriate time.”
He did not say why he was dismissed. Neither has anyone else, and that is the part worth being careful about. Golesh suspended Atkins for the Georgia game on Monday, Oct. 12, and said then: “We’ll revisit it next week when we meet again Monday. We’ll keep it in house beyond that. That’s the only piece of it I’ll be addressing.” Asked again on Oct. 19, hours before the dismissal surfaced, Golesh said: “We’re still working through it. I don’t have an update right now.”
No reason has been disclosed by the school or the coach. No arrest has been reported, no investigation has been reported, and no named source has described any specific violation. Atkins’ own reference to “my health” is unexplained. Anyone filling that blank in for you is guessing.
What Auburn Is Losing
Atkins led the SEC in tackles for loss last season with 17, and led Auburn with 84 tackles and nine sacks while also topping the team in solo tackles and forced fumbles. He was first-team All-SEC and a preseason All-SEC pick for 2026. He is a junior, listed at 6-foot, 210 pounds, and he started his career at LSU in 2024 before transferring to Auburn in 2025.
This season he had 37 tackles, three sacks and an interception. ESPN notes he would be eligible for the NFL draft if he chose that route instead of the portal.
The complicating fact is that Auburn just played its best game of the year without him. The Tigers beat No. 1 Georgia 27-24 at Sanford Stadium on Oct. 17, winning on Alex McPherson’s 34-yard field goal as time expired after Cody Sigler forced a Gunner Stockton fumble that Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered at the Auburn 44. Georgia dropped to 6-1 and fell to No. 5 in the AP poll.
What It Means for Alex Golesh
Golesh is 4-2 in his first season at Auburn with the signature win already in hand, and he has now handled a two-week discipline situation involving his most decorated player by saying almost nothing in public. That is a defensible choice. It is also one that leaves a first-year coach carrying a locker room story into the toughest stretch of his schedule.
Auburn hosts No. 18 LSU on Saturday at noon ET, which happens to be Atkins’ former school. Then come trips to Ole Miss and Mississippi State, a home game against Arkansas, Samford, and the Iron Bowl at Alabama. Bowl position and SEC standing get decided in the next four weeks, and the defense does it without the player who led the conference in tackles for loss a year ago.
Atkins is now the headline name available in the next portal cycle, and he will have a market. The reason he is available is the one thing nobody will say.
