Texas basketball just went shopping and came home with the entire store. Sean Miller has assembled one of the best transfer portal classes in the country, and the Longhorns are officially back on the map as a top-tier contender in year two of the Miller era.
The headliners are the two crown jewels. Colorado guard Isaiah Johnson, one of the top offensive players available in the portal, is coming to Austin. He set the Colorado freshman scoring record with 16.9 points per game, which ranked third in the Big 12 and 13th nationally among freshmen. That is a bucket. That is a real offensive weapon that Texas has not had in years.
Then there is David Punch from TCU. Punch was ranked as one of the top defensive players in the entire portal. He averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds last season as a two-way power forward at 6-foot-7. He is the exact kind of interior enforcer Miller loves. He guards. He rebounds. He finishes. He is going to be a matchup problem in the Big 12 all season.
The class does not stop there. Auburn wing Elyjah Freeman brings size and versatility on the perimeter. St. Mary’s guard Mikey Lewis is a shot-making combo who can score at all three levels. Tennessee’s Amari Evans is a defensive stalwart who fits Miller’s identity perfectly. Five portal additions. Five specific, needle-moving players. This is not scattershot roster building. This is a plan.
Miller has always been at his best when he has veterans who can guard. That is what defined his best Arizona teams. That is what he did at Xavier. And that is exactly what he has built in Austin heading into 2026 and 2027. The Longhorns should be a top-15 team in the preseason polls, and they might be higher than that when the ballots come out.
The Big 12 is a meat grinder. Kansas is Kansas. Houston is a machine. Baylor reloads. Iowa State has an identity. To compete in that league you need real players at every spot, and Miller now has that. He has scoring guards, he has a rim protector, he has wings who can shoot and defend. Kansas will still be favored, and rightfully so, but the gap between the Jayhawks and everybody else in this league is closing fast.
