Ole Miss Lands Australian Pro Ben Henshall, Day One Starter For Chris Beard
Chris Beard is not messing around. Ole Miss basketball just landed Ben Henshall, a 22-year-old Australian guard who spent three seasons playing professionally for the Perth Wildcats in the NBL. This is not a project. This is a plug-and-play starter for the Rebels heading into 2026 and 2027.
Henshall is 6-foot-5 with real pro reps under his belt. He averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists for Perth last season while playing meaningful minutes in one of the best leagues outside the NBA. He impressed evaluators at the 2025 NBA Draft Combine and drew real NBA interest before going undrafted. Now he is heading to Oxford.
The fit is obvious. Beard needs experienced guards who can defend, run offense, and handle the physical grind of SEC basketball. Henshall checks all of those boxes. He is not coming in as a freshman trying to figure out life. He is coming in as a grown man who has already played against grown men for money.
That matters more than people realize. The transition from college basketball to college basketball is jarring for most freshmen. The transition from professional Australian basketball to college basketball is basically a downgrade in physicality. Henshall will be ready for the pace, the contact, and the pressure from Day One.
Ole Miss desperately needed help. The 2025 and 2026 season was a struggle. The Rebels finished second-to-last in the SEC, and Beard has been on the recruiting trail in every corner of the globe trying to fix it. Signing an NBA Combine invitee with three years of pro experience is exactly the kind of move that starts to rebuild a roster.
Henshall has also been a consistent member of Australia’s senior national team. That means international competition experience. That means playing alongside NBA players in tournament settings. That is a resume that most incoming college guards cannot match.
The SEC just keeps getting harder. Every league has an arms race, but the SEC has become a machine. Auburn is a title contender. Alabama is loaded. Tennessee reloads. Florida is a national champion. Kentucky is Kentucky. To even be competitive in this league, you need experienced, mature players who can hold up under pressure. Henshall fits that mold.
Beard has always been a coach who trusts veterans. His best teams at Texas Tech were built around older, tougher, defensive-minded players. Henshall represents the exact archetype Beard wants to build around. He can shoot, he can pass, he can defend multiple positions, and he has the maturity of someone who has been paid to play basketball for the last three years.
The interesting question is whether Henshall becomes a one-year rental with NBA aspirations or whether he stays for multiple years to help stabilize the program. Given his age and pro background, he could very well use this season as a launching pad back to the NBA Draft process. Ole Miss might get one season, but that one season could be very productive.
Rebels fans should be excited. This is not a name that is going to blow up recruiting rankings. Henshall was not a top-100 high school prospect. But he is a proven professional player joining a program that needed proven pieces, and that is worth more than any recruiting star rating.
Chris Beard has work to do. Ole Miss has a long way to climb back to relevance in the SEC. But signing Ben Henshall is a real step in the right direction. Day One starter, day one contributor, and a foundational piece for whatever Beard is trying to build in Oxford.
