Miami Extends Jai Lucas After 26-9 First Season: Hurricanes Hoops Is Officially a Threat Again
Miami just made one of the smartest offseason moves in college basketball.
The Hurricanes extended head coach Jai Lucas with a raise this month after his stunning first season on the job. Lucas led Miami to a 26-9 overall record and 13-5 ACC mark. He did it with a roster that had zero returning players. Zero. That is not an exaggeration.
Locking Lucas up now is the kind of move athletic directors either look brilliant or foolish for later. This one looks brilliant.
The context of what Lucas did at Miami in year one is remarkable. He inherited a program that had gone into free fall after Jim Larranaga’s departure. The roster was gutted. NIL money was uncertain. The transfer portal took what was left, and the recruiting cycle had already passed by the time Lucas was hired.
He built a team from scratch, and it won. Twenty-six games. Thirteen conference wins in the ACC, which was a bloodbath. A trip to the postseason after most preseason projections had Miami buried at the bottom of the league.
That is the kind of first year that gets a coach on the short list for jobs at bigger programs. Lucas was already going to be one of the hottest names in the coaching search cycle after this year. Miami got ahead of it.
The raise matters just as much as the extension.
College basketball coaching salaries are climbing fast, and if Miami had waited, the market for Lucas would have exploded. Programs like Kentucky, Louisville, Arkansas, and any of the historically successful jobs are always looking for the next elite coach. Lucas was going to have his phone ringing.
By paying him now, Miami sent the message that they are serious about basketball. They are not just going to be a good football school with a nice basketball program on the side. They want to be a top-tier ACC program that can compete for championships.
The next question for Lucas is whether he can repeat. The transfer portal is not going to be as friendly this year. Every player he brought in for year one is now on someone else’s radar. NIL money is going to be a factor. Other ACC programs have upgraded.
But Lucas has proven he can build a roster from nothing and win with it. That skill is exactly what modern college basketball requires. The days of building a program around a four-year star are largely gone. The best coaches now know how to construct a functional team every year with mostly new pieces. Lucas is one of the best at it.
The ACC is going to be interesting this season. Duke and North Carolina are always in the mix. Louisville has upgraded. Virginia is trying to climb back. Miami is going to be right in the middle of that conversation, which nobody in the league was predicting a year ago.
The Hurricanes have the coach. They have the athletic department commitment. They have a nice arena. They have the recruiting base to attract top players.
Now they have contract security. That is the missing piece Miami needed to build something sustainable. Lucas is not going anywhere. He can recruit multi-year classes with confidence. He can build the program the way he wants.
Miami basketball is back. Jai Lucas is the reason. And the Hurricanes are locked in for the long haul.
