Duke basketball just landed the top recruit in the country. Five-star forward AJ Dybantsa announced his commitment to the Blue Devils on Sunday, choosing head coach Jon Scheyer over finalists BYU, Kansas, and North Carolina. Dybantsa is the top-ranked player in the 2027 class and immediately becomes the centerpiece of Duke’s next recruiting cycle.
Wait, the commitment is for 2027, but Dybantsa is reclassifying to 2026 and will suit up for Duke this season. The reclassification was reported minutes after the commitment, and Dybantsa is expected to be immediately eligible for the 2026-27 college basketball season.
This is a program-changing get for Duke. Dybantsa is a 6-foot-9 wing with legitimate NBA-ready shooting, elite athleticism, and a real handle. He is the consensus top prospect in his class and is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NBA Draft.
The other schools involved put up real fights. BYU offered a massive NIL package that reportedly approached seven figures. Kansas made Bill Self’s pitch personal and got Dybantsa on campus twice this summer. North Carolina, under head coach Hubert Davis, tried to sell family history and the tradition of the program.
Duke won because of Scheyer, the roster, and the NBA production. Scheyer has developed 12 first-round picks in his first four years as head coach, more than any other program. The current Duke roster is loaded with young talent, and playing alongside Cameron Boozer and Cayden Boozer will only accelerate Dybantsa’s development.
Dybantsa’s father spoke about the decision on the family’s social media accounts. He credited Scheyer and the Duke coaching staff for their patience, praised the campus visit experience, and said the family felt the fit was right at every level.
The commitment has real ACC implications. Duke was already the preseason No. 1 team in the country, and adding Dybantsa in-season could push the Blue Devils to another level. This is a team that could realistically win 30 games and enter March as a legitimate title favorite.
The other ACC contenders take a hit. North Carolina was the closest Dybantsa finalist and would have been a title contender with him. Louisville, under head coach Pat Kelsey, has emerged as an ACC threat, but the gap between Duke and everyone else in the conference just widened.
Dybantsa is expected to arrive in Durham within the next month. He will practice with the team through the winter and could see meaningful minutes by conference play. The 2026-27 Duke Blue Devils just became the most watched team in college basketball.
