Brian Kelly gets brutally honest about Notre Dame in his recent comments.

Heading into this weekend the Fighting Irish were expected to extremely well against a Michigan squad that traditionally collapsed under the pressure of facing strong teams.

Instead, the opposite happened. Notre Dame succumbed to the pressure of playing the Wolverines and ultimately got blown out 45-14.

Jim Harbaugh’s group essentially outplayed Notre Dame in every possible regard – offense, defense and special teams.

Afterward, Kelly got brutally honest about what had happened on Saturday.

“It was a disappointing night for Notre Dame,” he admitted.

“Congratulations to Michigan. They were the better team tonight in all phases. They were better. We didn’t coach well enough tonight.

“We didn’t play well enough. Consequently, that was the message to our team. I don’t have great in-depth (analysis) for you to give you reasons why.

“That’s not our identity. That’s what we showed tonight, and we own what we showed this evening. By the score, by a wide margin, it was Michigan tonight. They were the better team.”

The loss dropped Notre Dame to 5-2 on the year.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit had some very harsh words for Notre Dame following their performance against Michigan.

“For Notre Dame, they’re going to be favored for the rest of their games, but this is a devastating loss and embarrassing loss that they’ll have to bounce back from,” he said.

“I know we had weather and tough conditions with the wind and the rain, but Michigan had to play in those too.

“This is one that Notre Dame, collectively, will look back and be very, very frustrated at — coaching and the way they played.”

Next up, Notre Dame will look to bounce back against a gritty Virginia Tech team.
