Falcons Run for Five Touchdowns in New Orleans: Atlanta Found Its Identity

Atlanta ran for five touchdowns in the Superdome on Monday night, a Falcons single-game franchise record, and beat New Orleans 45-24 on the 20th anniversary of the building’s post-Katrina reopening.

Atlanta is 2-2. New Orleans is 1-3.

Two Robinsons, 207 Yards

Bijan Robinson carried 19 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns, including a 59-yard score on Atlanta’s third play from scrimmage. Brian Robinson Jr. added 62 yards and a career-high three rushing touchdowns.

Together they went for 207 yards on 33 carries. Atlanta outrushed New Orleans 205 to 50.

Bijan Robinson said the plan was explicit about the environment: the Falcons wanted to “make sure that pin drop happens in the first quarter.” The 59-yarder on the third snap did exactly that.

Penix Did Not Need to Do Much

Michael Penix Jr. finished 15-of-20 for 223 yards and a touchdown, a 31-yard throw to Jahan Dotson. He is back from the knee injury that cut his 2025 short.

Twenty attempts. That is what a functioning run game buys a quarterback coming off a major injury, and it is a far more sustainable formula than asking him to throw 40 times a week in October.

Atlanta put up 420 total yards to New Orleans’s 320 and held the ball for 30:45.

The Saints Are Falling Apart

Tyler Shough went 30-of-48 for 286 yards and a touchdown with multiple turnovers. Those are volume numbers from a team that spent the night chasing points.

Chris Olave caught eight passes for 116 yards, which was the only consistently good thing New Orleans did. Alvin Kamara scored twice from three and five yards out and was questionable to return with a knee injury. No diagnosis has been reported.

Shough called the performance “embarrassing.” He is not wrong, and he is also a quarterback who threw 48 times because his defense gave up 205 rushing yards.

Atlanta Has Scored 80 Points in Two Weeks

That is the number that should get people’s attention. The Falcons have gone from a team searching for an offensive identity to one that just put up 45 on the road on a short week.

They host Baltimore on Sunday, a game that may or may not include Lamar Jackson depending on how his ankle responds. New Orleans hosts Minnesota.

My read: the Falcons were never a passing team and spent two years pretending otherwise. Hand it to two backs 33 times, let Penix throw 20 efficient balls, and the offense works. It is not complicated and it took them a long time to admit it.
