Mariners Fire Dan Wilson: Jerry Dipoto Says Seattle Will Hire From Outside

Seattle went to Game 7 of the ALCS last year. This year it went 76-86, and the manager is gone.

Dan Wilson is out as Mariners manager after a third-place finish in the AL West. Reporting on the exact framing varies, with some outlets describing a firing and others saying Wilson announced he would not return. Either way, the job is open.

Dipoto Was Unusually Blunt

President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto did not leave room for interpretation about the search.

“We will go outside to hire our manager,” Dipoto said. “We need fresh thought.”

That is a front office admitting its internal pipeline failed. Dipoto also described recent years in Seattle as insular, which is a remarkable thing to say about an organization he has run since 2015.

The Whole Staff Went With Him

This was not a single firing. Bench coach Manny Acta, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, infield coach Perry Hill and first base coach Eric Young Jr. are all out.

When a team clears four coaches plus the manager, it is dismantling a culture rather than reacting to a win total.

Wilson Deserved Better Than This Record

Wilson took over in August 2024, replacing Scott Servais. He won the AL West in 2025 and took Seattle to Game 7 of the ALCS, which is the deepest run this franchise has made in a quarter century.

Then 2026 happened: Seattle’s first losing season across a full campaign since 2019.

Here is the argument for patience that Seattle rejected. A manager who delivers a division title and a Game 7 in the championship series has demonstrated he can run a clubhouse. One bad year after that is usually a roster problem.

The counterargument is harder to dismiss. Seattle has had the same core, the same pitching philosophy and the same offensive shortcomings for years, and it keeps producing the same result with different names in the dugout.

No Timeline, No Finalists

Dipoto said prior major league managerial experience is preferred but not required. He and general manager Justin Hollander are making calls. No timeline has been announced.

Some outlets have floated names including Torrey Lovullo, Stephen Vogt, Kristopher Negron and Raul Ibanez. None of that has been confirmed by the Mariners, and it should be treated as speculation rather than a shortlist.

The Real Question Is Above the Dugout

Seattle has now changed managers twice since 2024, and the constant through all of it is Dipoto. A front office that fires a manager who reached Game 7 of the ALCS, then says the organization needs fresh thought, is describing a problem it also owns.

Whoever takes this job inherits a pitching staff that has been the franchise’s identity for years and a lineup that has never been good enough to support it. Fresh thought is a fine thing to want. It does not hit left-handed pitching.
