Patrick Mahomes Returns From Torn ACL, Scores on 15-Yard Scramble in Chiefs’ 31-10 Win

Patrick Mahomes played his first full game Monday night since tearing his ACL and LCL last December. The Chiefs beat Denver 31-10 at Arrowhead. And if you only read the box score, you would have no idea anything meaningful happened.

Fifteen of 27 for 184 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. On any other night that is a shrug. On this night it was the least interesting thing about his evening.

The moment that mattered came in the first quarter, when Mahomes scrambled 15 yards for the game’s opening touchdown. Nine months after surgery on two ligaments in the same knee, the two-time MVP took off running and did not protect himself out of bounds. He ran into the end zone.

The scramble was the answer to the only real question

Everything about an ACL and LCL recovery comes down to trust. Arm strength does not vanish with a knee injury. Accuracy does not vanish. What goes is the willingness to plant, cut and take contact without thinking about it first, and that is the piece nobody can measure in a practice rep.

Mahomes answered it in the first quarter of his first game back. He did not need four weeks of easing in. He tucked and ran on the opening scoring drive.

He looked rusty at other points, per the report, and that is fine. Fifteen completions on 27 attempts is a rough afternoon for him by his standards, and the interception was real. But rust is a timing problem and timing comes back with reps. A quarterback who is scared of his own knee is a much longer project, and that clearly is not what Kansas City has.

The buildup was quieter than you would expect

On Sept. 8, Andy Reid said there was a “good chance” Mahomes would start the opener, with reports suggesting he would “most likely” go. For a three-time Super Bowl champion coming off a torn ACL, that is a remarkably low-key runway. Mahomes had set his sights on the 2026 opener from the start of the rehab, and he made it.

He did not hide what the night meant to him afterward, posting on X: “Want to give all glory and thanks to God! Letting me be out there doing what i love again! ChiefsKingdom this is just the start see yall next week!”

“This is just the start” is the right read. Kansas City did not need Mahomes to carry this game and did not ask him to. Kenneth Walker put up 191 yards from scrimmage in his Chiefs debut, the defense held Denver to 10 points, and the quarterback was allowed to be a supporting actor in his own comeback.

That is the ideal script for a Week 1 return. Manage the game, take the free touchdown when the defense leaves the middle of the field open, hand the ball to the guy having a career night, and go home with a 21-point win and a healthy knee.

The 184 yards will get forgotten by Thursday. The scramble is what people will remember, and it is the only part that told us anything.
