Caitlin Clark Wins World Cup Gold With Team USA as Fever Return With Four Games Left
Caitlin Clark came off the bench in a World Cup final. Then she went out and shot 4-of-5 in 13 minutes on the way to a gold medal. Both of those things are true, and the second one is the one that actually tells you something.
Team USA beat France 97-79 in Berlin to win the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup. Clark finished the final with 12 points, two threes, three assists and a rebound in those 13 minutes. That is a player who was not given a starting role and refused to let it become a story.
Her tournament numbers were modest by her standards. She played all six games and averaged 7.8 points on 35.9% shooting, 5.3 assists and 2.2 rebounds. International basketball is a different game with a different ball, different spacing and a roster full of players who all used to be the best one on their team. Kara Lawson made a rotation call, and the gold medal says it worked.
What matters for Indiana is the shooting touch that showed up when the lights were brightest. Four makes on five shots in a final is not a player shaking off rust. That is a player arriving.
Now the hard part
The Fever resume their season Friday on the road against the Toronto Tempo at Coca-Cola Coliseum, after a break of nearly a month. Indiana sits at 26-14, fifth in the standings, with four regular season games to play. A top-four finish means home court in the playoffs.
Four games, one spot to climb, and a roster that has not played meaningful basketball in weeks. Some of the group was in Germany playing the most intense competition on earth. Some of them were home. Getting those two versions of a team back on the same page in a couple of practices is a real problem, and it usually shows up in the first game back.
Which is why Friday in Toronto is the whole thing. Win that one and the rust story dies immediately. Lose it and Indiana is chasing three games’ worth of ground with a roster still finding its rhythm.
The call
I think they get it. A 26-14 team is not fifth because of anything it did wrong, and the players Indiana just got back are not returning tired and beaten. They are returning as World Cup champions. Clark shooting the way she did in Berlin, with a month of rest on her legs, is a problem for anyone she sees over the next two weeks.
Home court in a playoff building in Indiana is worth chasing hard, and this team has every reason to chase it. Take the Fever to finish top four.
One more thing, because it is too good to skip. On Monday, Clark posted a message on X backing the Kansas City Chiefs: “WE ARE BACK!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!! @Chiefs” with three hearts. Kansas City then beat the Denver Broncos 31-10 at Arrowhead that night.
Gold medal on Sunday, apparent good-luck charm on Monday. The Fever will take whatever she is carrying right now.
