Odell Beckham Jr. is back with the New York Giants, and on Sept. 11 he showed up with the blonde hair. If you were around in 2015, you know exactly what that looks like and exactly what it used to mean.
The reason is better than any marketing pitch could be. “I kind of got a request from a couple of the young guys. ‘We need to see the blonde,'” Beckham said. “It’s always fun to switch it up.”
Young guys in that locker room grew up watching the blonde version of OBJ make catches that did not look physically possible. Now they play with him and they wanted the visual. That is a fun place for a veteran to find himself.
The look that took over the league
Beckham first went blonde in 2015, the season after his rookie year, and it went viral immediately. Kids across the country were begging their parents for the same dye job. It became one of the signature looks in the sport almost overnight.
That is what happens when the style is attached to production. Beckham opened his career with three straight Pro Bowl seasons and an Offensive Rookie of the Year award. The hair only mattered because the football was that good.

But there is real value in what he can be right now. A veteran who has caught passes in a Super Bowl, who knows how to run an NFL route tree, and who the younger receivers in that room clearly look up to. Those guys asked him to go blonde because they respect him, and that respect translates on practice fields.
The Giants also get something they have not had in a while, which is a real reason for the fanbase to show up excited. MetLife Stadium is going to lose its mind the first time he catches a ball in that uniform with that hair and that number. Whatever you think of the football fit, that moment is going to be loud.

This is a homecoming done right. Beckham is not pretending he is the same player, he is not demanding a starring role, and he is leaning into the parts of his legacy that New York actually loved.
