Roger Goodell Lands New NFL Contract Extension: Owners Give Commissioner Another Long Run
Roger Goodell is not going anywhere. NFL owners voted this week to extend the commissioner’s contract, keeping him at the top of the league office for the foreseeable future and cementing his status as the longest-serving commissioner in the game’s modern history.
The move is not a surprise. Goodell has taken plenty of public shots over the years, from Deflategate to Bountygate to endless replay debates, but on the metric owners actually care about, revenue, he has been ruthless.
Under Goodell, the NFL has ballooned into a media empire. New broadcast deals, streaming partnerships with Amazon, Netflix, and YouTube, a booming international series, and a Super Bowl that now approaches a global holiday. Owners are richer than they have ever been, and Goodell gets the credit even when the on-field product does not deserve it.
Critics will point to the discipline inconsistencies, the Deshaun Watson suspension mess, and a diversity hiring record that still lags every other pro sport. Those are legitimate complaints. They are also not the reason the owners hire and fire commissioners.
The extension buys Goodell more time to deliver on his next big projects. Expansion is the obvious one. There is real momentum behind adding a franchise in London or Madrid before 2035, and Goodell wants to be the guy in the chair when the ribbon is cut.
The other is the collective bargaining agreement, which expires in 2030. Owners want continuity heading into what will be an ugly labor fight. Goodell has handled two prior CBA negotiations without losing a full season. That is worth its weight in gold to a room full of billionaires.
Players will not celebrate this news. The NFL Players Association has openly clashed with Goodell over discipline, health protocols, and the constant push for an 18-game season. Extending him signals owners are not budging on any of that.
Fans will grumble on social media, roll their eyes at the next PR misstep, and then keep watching in record numbers. That is the whole game. Goodell is not popular. He does not need to be. He needs to keep the money printer running, and the money printer is running just fine.
The commissioner is now essentially undefeated. Every controversy that was supposed to end his tenure has instead ended with him getting more power and more money. The owners just handed him more of both. Whether you love him or hate him, Roger Goodell is the NFL, and the NFL is not slowing down.
