Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Injury Update: Blue Jays Star Placed on 7-Day IL After Yankees Collision
The Vladimir Guerrero Jr. injury the Blue Jays feared is real. Toronto placed its franchise first baseman on the 7-day concussion injured list Friday after a nasty sixth-inning collision with Yankees infielder George Lombard Jr. at Rogers Centre.
The play was chaos. George Springer Jr. dribbled a ball toward third with runners on, Ryan McMahon fired a low throw to first, and Luis Garcia Jr. could not handle it. Guerrero read the scramble and took off for third, launching into a slide as Lombard came across the bag.

Guerrero is the axis this offense turns on. He entered Friday hitting like an MVP candidate and driving the middle of the order. Losing him for a week means Toronto has to lean on Bo Bichette and a lineup that suddenly looks a lot thinner against contenders like the Yankees.
The 7-day concussion IL sounds short, but head injuries never operate on a schedule. Players who look fine on day three can crash on day five. The Jays should treat this like a two-week outage minimum until Vlad is symptom free and back to full activity.
There is a wider point about baseball’s collision culture buried in this play. MLB spent years tightening the rules at home plate to protect catchers. Nobody thought to legislate what happens when a runner slides into third under a jumping infielder. Expect this to become a talking point at the next competition committee meeting.
For now, the Blue Jays need a plan. Ernie Clement can handle first base in short bursts, and Spencer Horwitz has been getting reps. Neither of them replaces Vlad’s bat or his gravity in the lineup. Toronto’s postseason math just got tighter.
Watch the update Monday. If Vlad is out of protocol and taking swings, this is a scare and nothing more. If he is still symptomatic, this becomes the injury that reshapes the AL East race for the rest of August.
