Alabama only has one path to the College Football Playoff, says ESPN.

On Tuesday night, the most recent version of the College Football Playoff rankings was released. While Ohio State finally leapfrogging LSU to No. 1 stole most of the headlines, some wondered what the new rankings meant for Alabama.

ESPN insider Kirk Herbstreit believes that there is essentially only one path to a postseason berth for the Crimson Tide.

“The thing that stood out to me is how [Playoff committee chairman] Rob Mullens will define unequivocal and what that means in that room,” he said.

“He said all 13 members have to basically look at each other and say, ‘it’s not in my analytics or efficiency numbers, but guys, they’re just better.’

“Two years ago, Alabama, was one of the best four and they went on to beat Georgia in the championship. It just doesn’t feel like that right now.

“They haven’t had those moments to separate themselves. I just really feel the Big 12 or Pac 12 champion will move ahead of them in this thing.”

Going by this logic, the only way Alabama wins out is if both Oklahoma/Baylor and Utah suffer losses between now and season’s end.

Based on everything we have seen thus far this year, that is a very unlikely scenario.
