3 Schools Emerge As Legit Urban Meyer Suitors Post-Jaguars Firing

Urban Meyer’s embarrassing weekend, which has threatened to torpedo both his professional life and his personal life, has overshadowed something important: he isn’t a particularly good NFL coach.

The Jacksonville Jaguars being 0-4 on the year is bad enough, but it’s not the lone indicator that Meyer isn’t cut out for the pro ranks. Far more glaring is the fact that his players have already turned on him and that ownership is so flippantly publicly bashing him these days.

Maybe Meyer lasts the year, maybe he doesn’t – but there’s no way he survives in Jacksonville long-term.

Fortunately for the 57-year-old he is still relatively young and is an incredible collegiate coach. Three championships and an 187–32 record speak for themselves.

When Meyer gets fired, he is going to have some options.

According to Bill Bender of Sporting News, three schools stand out as the likeliest and most legitimate suitors for Meyer: USC, Florida State and LSU.

The Trojans are a self-explanatory option. They’ve been linked to Meyer for years now, and if not for a weird loyalty to the eventually-fired-anyway Clay Helton, he would’ve likely gotten the job a long time ago.

A couple of weeks ago Meyer was asked about leaving Jacksonville for the USC job. The way he opted to answer that question raised a lot of eyebrows.

Florida State’s 1-4 start to the season also makes them an intriguing option.

“Mike Norvell is struggling in his second season, and the Seminoles have struggled in the ACC since Jimbo Fisher left. Meyer getting hired at Florida would be similar to when Rick Pitino was hired by Louisville,” Bender wrote. “Hard feelings for a rival were put aside in that case. Of course, winning soothes a lot of feelings, and the Seminoles haven’t been doing a lot of that lately”

Finally, don’t sleep on LSU – which has been a mess since Joe Burrow’s departure. Between Ed Orgeron’s leaked photo scandal and Arch Manning’s steadfast refusal to entertain them as a school he’d want to play for, it has been one embarrassment after another.

Meyer is still a great coach – when he is permitted to be in the sort of environment where he thrives. That situation just so happens to be college.
