Washington Redskins Signing Philip Rivers?

Are the Washington Redskins signing Philip Rivers this offseason? One way or another, it appears Ron Rivera wants a new quarterback.

Earlier this week, reports began to surface that Washington was looking at alternatives to Dwayne Haskins. Originally, the rationale was that with the talent available in this year’s draft when it came to the quarterback position, it would only make sense for Rivera and Co. to do their due diligence.

Specifically, Rivera made it clear that he planned on talking to LSU’s Joe Burrow and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.

Although this made for an uncomfortable situation, given that the team had selected Haskins in the first round last year, it was not a totally unprecedented scenario.

Just one season ago, the Arizona Cardinals took Kyler Murray despite having selected Josh Rosen the year prior. All in all, that proved to be a smart decision.

If Rivera believed that one of the incoming quarterbacks had more promise than Haskins, it would make sense for him to pursue that quarterback.

This weekend, however, an interesting new report emerged.

According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, there is a growing belief around the league that Washington will pursue a quarterback like Rivers in free agency this summer.

“While expectations have the Indianapolis Colts ending up with Philip Rivers, sources at the Combine tell me they expect the Washington Redskins to make a bid for the quarterback,” he reported.

“The same sources say it will be tough for Washington to sign Rivers and it will likely take a massive contract.”

Whether the Redskins ultimately come away with Rivers or not, the mere fact that he is a target is very telling. It means that Rivera’s interest in this year’s quarterback crop is not simply because one of them caught his eye – it is because he is dissatisfied with Washington’s quarterback situation as it is presently constructed.

More likely than not, Rivers will end up with the Indianapolis Colts. That move just makes too much sense on too many levels not to happen.

That said, if Rivera is looking for a quarterback this hard – it has to mean something. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Washington’s quarterback situation will definitely be something to keep an eye on as free agency approaches in just a few weeks.
