Warriors Star Klay Thompson Honors Dying Woman’s Wish

Warriors Star Klay Thompson Honors Dying Woman’s Wish

Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson is one of the most beloved players in the NBA. He has obviously always marched to the beat of his own drum, but his spirit and general demeanor are so appealing that folks can’t help but appreciate him.

Recently, Thompson reminded one and all once again why so many hold him in such high esteem.

Last Friday, KTVU’s Frank Somerville shared a story on Facebook regarding Debbie Wright, a huge Warriors fan suffering from metastatic breast cancer.

Wright was reportedly told that she had two to six weeks left to live. Her last wish was to meet her favorite player – Thompson.

“I ask for nothing else … no gifts, money, or anything … just for the possibility of a visit from Mr. Thompson,” Wright told her husband, who relayed the message to Somerville.

When word got back to Thompson regarding this, he immediately stepped up. This past Monday, he FaceTimed with both her and her husband.

Shortly thereafter, Wright’s husband reached back out to Somerville to tell him what happened.

“Greetings, Mr. Somerville! We had our video meeting with Klay this morning! It lasted about 25 minutes. Klay is really a kind and gentle soul. He even introduced his dog Rocko to my Bride!” Randall wrote to Somerville.

This kind of stuff is why Thompson is who he is, and why people feel the way they do about him as both a player and a person. It’s also why the game so sorely missed him this past season.

Next year, Thompson will return from an ACL tear he suffered in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors. The injury kept him out of action for the entirety of his team’s 2019-20 campaign. Without him, Golden State was the worst team in the entire league.

This past week, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr appeared on the All The Smoke podcast and talked about Thompson’s recovery.

“Yeah, Klay has looked great,” he said.

“I’ve seen him a couple of times during the quarantine in Orange County, and I’ve watched him work out over the past few months a couple of times and kept up to speed with him. I was already aware that he was doing well and feeling really good, and this is just the natural next step, to be on the court with nine other guys and so, it has been really good for him.”

Obviously Thompson isn’t all the way back yet, but he is getting close.

“He looks great, his rhythm and his timing aren’t there, but there’s no way that it would be, given that he’s been away for a year and a half,” Kerr continued.

“But he’s healthy, he’s feeling good, and it has been great to have him in the building. Obviously, thinking about next season with him, Steph, Draymond, and Andrew Wiggins, we can start thinking about having a great team again.”

When Thompson returns to form, the league better watch out. People have forgotten just how good this Warriors group was for the better part of the last decade, but they will no doubt get a swift reminder when Thompson starts raining threes on their favorite team.
