Urban Meyer Set To Become Dallas Cowboys Coach

Urban Meyer is set to become the next Dallas Cowboys coach.

Meyer, 55, was widely considered to be a shoe-in to become the next USC head coach.

The idea was that he would sit out a year following his departure from Ohio State, wait for Clay Helton’s inevitable firing, and then slip right in.

Somewhere along the way, USC hired a surprising athletic director with no ties to Meyer. As a result, Helton was retained and Meyer found himself on the outside looking in.

There have been murmurs that he could go to Notre Dame if Brian Kelly ultimately leaves, but that is far from a done deal.

So where does Meyer go from here? USC is taken. Florida State is taken. Notre Dame is taken.

Well, if college is off the table, Meyer has set his sights on the next best thing.

According to NFL insider Jane Slater, Dallas has engaged Meyer in conversation about their soon-to-be vacancy at head coach.

“Jerry Jones says Jason Garrett will remain the coach but I can confirm a very real interest in Urban Meyer,” she wrote.

“In fact, I’m told Stephen Jones spoke with him recently.”

The Cowboys suffered their seventh loss of the year last week, and now sit at 6-7 on the season.

Dallas is currently tied with the Philadelphia Eagles atop the NFC East. If the two teams finish the year tied, the Cowboys hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

That being said, even if Garrett’s squad limps into the postseason and then gets swiftly bounced – it won’t do much for him.

Garrett has been the head coach of the Cowboys for nearly a decade and has very little to show for it. His contract expires this summer and Jerry Jones has shown zero interest in re-signing him.

Meyer would be a flashy, big-name hire for Dallas. And his undeniable success at the college level could spark memories of Jimmy Johnson coming in and winning multiple championships.

At least one former Cowboys star has already publicly endorsed the would-be move.

“Urban Meyer to coach the cowboys next year?… no brainer… I’m going to get jealous. Jerry [Jones], Stephen [Jones] hear him out. Let him get you a winning organization to go along with them billions!!!” tweeted out wide receiver Dez Bryant.

Four members of the current Cowboys team played at Ohio State under Meyer, including star running back Ezekiel Elliot.

Barring a miraculous Super Bowl run, Garrett is as good as gone.

Will Meyer ultimately be the one to slip into his role? Time will tell. But it is certainly beginning to look like that will be the case.
