Is UFC 249 getting cancelled over the coronavirus?

An event highlighted by a Lightweight Championship bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson is now in doubt.

UFC 249 was supposed to take place in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday, April 18. Now with every significant sporting event in the nation getting called off in light of the coronavirus, there are serious questions as to whether this event will proceed.

Up to this point, UFC boss Dana White has remained fairly hush hush on what the plan is going forward. That said, on Wednesday, he did take a moment out of his day to make a little joke regarding the confusion.

With everyone questioning the status of UFC 249, he posted the following meme on social media:

At the moment, is remains unclear as to what the plan for UFC 249 will be going forward. More likely than not, White will wait and see how the coronavirus situation develops over the next week or so before finalizing a decision one way or the other.

If the event does ultimately get cancelled, though, it will mark the fifth time that Nurmagomedov and Ferguson were scheduled to fight only for it to get called off for one reason or another.
