Surprising Coaching Candidate Emerges For Washington State

A surprising new coaching candidate emerged for Washington State on Thursday.

With Mike Leach’s defection to Mississippi State, the Cougars now have a vacancy that needs filling. Under his watch the program remained a respectable force in the Pac-12, and whoever comes in to replace him will have big shoes to fill.

According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Washington State is looking at Central Michigan’s Jim McElwain as a possible replacement.

McElwain previously coached at Florida.

“Hearing that Jim McElwain could be a target for #WAZZU,” Feldman tweeted.

“Took over a 1-11 team and got #CMU into the MAC title game and has been coach of the year in three different conferences. And has deep ties in the Pacific Northwest.”

Washington State will likely take some time to interview more candidates, but McElwain is definitely an early favorite to land the job at this juncture.
