The Saint Peter’s Peacocks have been the best story of the NCAA Tournament this year. Not only did they become the first No. 15 seed to ever reach the Elite 8, but they did so in the most respectable fashion imaginable.

Nobody gave this group a shot against Kentucky, Murray State or Purdue. Not that the lack of faith deterred them any.

One big reason for Saint Peter’s having so much success has been the play of the team’s young star, Doug Edert. Between his unique style and one-of-a-kind swagger, he has quickly won the hearts and minds of fans all over the nation.

This week, Edert’s girlfriend Olyvia Smith, a junior softball player from Delaware, also went viral by extension.

Smith boasts nearly 4,000 followers on Instagram and routinely gets great engagement on her posts all by herself:

Edert and Smith aren’t the first celebrity sports couple to go viral in recent months.

Obviously Joe Burrow and his special lady are constantly in the headlines, as are Lonzo Ball and his girl, as well as Dak Prescott and his.

That’s just the nature of celebrity sports life.

How long will Edert and Smith remain relevant in the larger sports media cultural zeitgeist?

Time will tell.
