Panthers, Raiders Inching Towards Cam Newton Trade?

The Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders could very well end up agreeing to a trade centering around quarterback Cam Newton.

The 2015 NFL MVP has been the subject of a lot of speculation over the past few months. Ever since the firing of Ron Rivera and hiring former Baylor head coach Matt Rhule, Newton’s status has been in doubt.

As things currently stand, the 30-year-old has one year remaining on his deal with Carolina. Unfortunately, the Panthers seem to want to go in a different direction and begin rebuilding anew.

Last year, Newton missed all but two outings. He is said to be getting increasingly healthy now, but it is hard to know what that really means. The former Auburn star has been plagued by injuries for several years now.

This past week, CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora suggested that a Newton-to-Vegas deal would make a lot of sense for both sides. According to him, a “longtime NFL source” echoed those sentiments.

“If he is healthy this is a great fit,” La Canfora said.

“(Jon) Gruden knows all of these quarterbacks from studying them and meeting them at ESPN. I could see him buying low on Cam. He’s ready to move on from (Derek) Carr. The Panthers need draft picks and the Raiders have plenty.”

La Canfora also made it a point to note that he was not alone in his thinking.

“I have heard similar sentiments from other well-connected sources about this proposition and have yet to encounter a trusted source in the NFL who believes Carr will be back with the Raiders,” he added.

Over the past few weeks, the Raiders have been linked to Tom Brady, Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota and now Newton. While it is unclear which quarterback they will ultimately come away with, it is becoming increasingly clear that Carr’s days with the organization seem to be numbered.
