NHL Set To Announce Kraken As New Seattle Team

The NHL is set to announce the Kraken as Seattle’s new hockey team. Although the big reveal will not happen until Thursday morning, everything is in place for major announcement that will add a major sports franchise to a city still reeling from the departure of the Sonics.

The NHL initially approved Seattle as a destination for its 32nd franchise back in 2018. Fans have sat with anticipation for nearly two years waiting to hear what new team they would be getting.

Among the team names that received consideration are the Emeralds, Totems and Sockeyes.

That said, one name has consistently earned the more critical acclaim from fans around the city – Kraken.

If NHL officials and the brass behind Seattle’s new hockey team have any sense, and if the will of the fans matters at all, Kraken will ultimately be the name they announce on Thursday morning.

Seattle’s new NHL team will ultimately play in the Climate Pledge Arena, formerly known as KeyArena. The name comes as part of a deal worth millions of dollars put together by Jeff Bezos and Amazon.

The arena is currently in the midst of a $1 billion reconstruction process and will open next season. Seattle’s NHL franchise will officially take the ice that very same season.
