The Will Levis trade rumors are back, and this time there is a deadline attached. NFL roster cuts hit on August 30. The Titans have been trying to move Levis for the better part of a year. The next few days may finally force a resolution.
Levis was drafted in the second round of the 2023 draft as the quarterback of the future in Nashville. That timeline did not survive contact with the real NFL. Two seasons of inconsistent play, injuries, and mounting evidence that he is not the answer for the Titans led to Tennessee moving on this offseason and installing a new starter.
Since then, Levis has been on the trade block in name only. Teams have called, teams have inquired, and no one has been willing to give up an actual asset for him. That is the market for a 26-year-old quarterback who has flashed real arm talent but has not been able to put it together in game action.
What changes now is the calendar. Every team has to cut to 53 players by Saturday. Quarterback rooms across the league are about to get shaken up. Backups will be released. Third-string competitions will be settled. Injuries in preseason games have created immediate needs at multiple teams. Levis is suddenly more attractive to a franchise that needs a body who can at least run a scout team.
The Titans are not going to get a real pick for him. That ship sailed a while back. What they will get, if a deal comes together, is something like a conditional Day 3 pick or a body-for-body swap that saves them a roster spot and moves on from a mistake.
The alternative is releasing him outright. The Titans would eat the remainder of his contract and Levis would be free to sign anywhere. That is the outcome nobody in Tennessee wants because it means walking away with zero return on a second-round pick, but it is where this is headed if a trade does not materialize by Saturday.
The teams to watch are the ones with quarterback injuries in camp. Any franchise that lost its QB2 or QB3 to a serious injury this month is a potential landing spot. There are more of those than you would expect, and the market always develops in the final 48 hours before cutdown day.
For Levis himself, the trade is the better outcome. Getting picked up on waivers means he lands somewhere based on the reverse-order rules. Getting traded means he goes to a team that actually wants him. That is a meaningful difference for a player trying to salvage a career.
The Titans made this bed. They are trying to unmake it in a hurry. Saturday will tell us if they succeed.
