Browns, Redskins Inching Closer To Big Trade

The Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins are inching closer to a big trade, it would appear.

Over the past few weeks, one of the big questions surrounding Washington was what would happen with offensive lineman Trent Williams.

Williams’ issues with the old Redskins regime were no secret, but there was some hope that things may change with Ron Rivera becoming the new head coach.

On Thursday afternoon, a final decision was reached: Williams would be permitted to seek a trade.

Almost immediately, Cleveland stepped up to the plate.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns have desperately been looking for some protection up front and are very interested in Williams.

“The Browns are casting a wide net in their search for an heir apparent to Joe Thomas, and they’ll explore two big fish that became available Thursday in Redskins seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams and Eagles nine-time Pro Bowler Jason Peters,” she wrote.

Browns star Baker Mayfield was the most sacked quarterback in the entire league last year. That was a big reason for his sophomore slump and why Cleveland ultimately finished 6-10.

Beyond just the team’s need for offensive line support, the Browns also had interest in acquiring Williams before. Under former general manager John Dorsey the team tried to land Williams in 2019. Ultimately, the try was unsuccessful.

Will things go better on this go-round? Time will tell.
