Robert Kraft Explains Letting Tom Brady Leave Patriots
Robert Kraft explained letting Tom Brady leave the Patriots recently.
Brady is becoming an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
New England cannot franchise tag him, so the organization will simply have to make him a good offer.
There have been reports in recent weeks that the Patriots will offer him a one or two year deal that will pay him $30 million annually. While that is undoubtedly a fair proposition, many have asked why New England is letting Brady become a free agent in the first place.
Why not simply lock him up before any other organization has a chance to woe him?
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport recently gave some inside knowledge into team owner Robert Kraft’s thinking that may answer that question.

Per Rapoport, Kraft feels that by giving Brady a chance to see the what is out there in free agency, he is actually increasing the odds of the future Hall of Fame quarterback returning.
In Kraft’s estimation, if a reunion was meant to be, then head coach Bill Belichick, Brady and he would also come to a middle ground regarding Brady’s new deal. If not, then all involved would move on.
In 2019 Brady led the Patriots to a 12-4 mark and a playoff spot. Unfortunately, that playoff spot was the Patriots’ first Wild Card berth in a decade.
New England promptly got upset by the Tennessee Titans in that round and the year came to a close.
Brady’s 3.9 percent touchdown rate this past season was the lowest of his career.
At the moment, all signs still point to the Patriots being favorites to re-sign Brady this offseason. Whether the same will be true this time next month remains to be seen.
