Amari Cooper Leaving Cowboys For Surprising Team
Amari Cooper is leaving the Cowboys for a surprising team, it appears.
Heading into this NFL offseason, Dallas has one big priority.
That priority? Re-signing quarterback Dak Prescott.
Further down on the list is doing the same with Cooper, the team’s best wide receiver.
Unfortunately, Cooper may not stick around long enough for that to happen.
According to a recent Bleacher Report article, Cooper may have his sights set on a different organization.
That organization?
The Buffalo Bills.
Bleacher Report notes that Buffalo is currently on a mission to surround quarterback Josh Allen with more talent.
Much in the same way Cooper provided a security blanket of sorts for the then-emerging Prescott, he could do the same for Allen.
This past season the Bills went 10-6 and qualified for an AFC Wild Card berth. The team was one second half collapse against the Houston Texans away from making it to the Divisional Round.
If Buffalo wants to keep improving, getting talented wide receivers for Allen to throw to is imperative.
“Not only is Cooper a big, physical target who can win in critical situations, but he’s also a former teammate of Buffalo receiver Cole Beasley,” the column notes.
“Bringing in Cooper would offer at least a little established chemistry to the receiving corps. It would also give Allen the legitimate No. 1 target he’s lacked since arriving in the NFL.”
Cooper will likely be a highly sought after piece this offseason.
Buffalo has roughly $80.1 million available in salary cap space, so whatever his market value ultimately is, the team will be abl to pay.
If the Cowboys are able to work out a deal with Prescott and don’t have to franchise tag him, they could use the tag on Cooper. The tag will cost somewhere in the $18.5 million range in 2020.
If Cooper does leave town, his new deal could eclipse the $96.3 million that New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas pulled in.
He could also end up with more cash than the Atlanta Falcons’ $66 million that receiver Julio Jones walked away with.
Recently, Cooper expressed a desire to stay with Dallas – but said he understood at the end of the day that business was business.
“I haven’t talked to my agent about my contract situation,” Cooper said.
“We’ve talked about other things like Pro Bowl, things I have to do at the Super Bowl. I don’t want to rush it. I think it’s not something that’s imminent. So just taking it day by day.”
In 2019 Cooper recorded 1,189 yards and eight scores on 79 receptions.
Time will tell if he will be able to bring the same sort of production to the Bills.
