New York Giants Make Odd Coaching Decision

The New York Giants made an odd coaching decision this week.

After firing their last two coaches for unsuccessful two-year campaigns, management knew this hire had to be a home run.

For more than a week the Giants actively pursued Baylor head coach, Matt Rhule.

Rhule was widely considered one of the most impressive candidates on the market.

Unfortunately, the Carolina Panthers ended up making Rhule an offer he simply could not refuse.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Carolina’s deal was for seven years and $60 million. With incentives, that total may get to $70 million before it is all said and done.

Rhule went back to the Giants with the Panthers’ offer in hand, but the team reportedly refused to offer anything better.

Shortly after losing out on Rhule, New York hired New England Patriots special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach Joe Judge to be their next head coach.

The 38-year-old has spent the last eight years under Bill Belichick and was a special teams assistant for Alabama from 2009 to 2011.

Judge made headlines last week for also being a serious candidate to take over as the next head coach of Mississippi State.

Ultimately, the bright lights on New York proved to be too alluring.

While Judge has obviously worked for two of the best head coaches in football over the past decade, it remains to be seen how he will fare as the head coach of a high-profile franchise like the Giants.
