Does Bill Belichick want Andy Dalton to be a Patriots quarterback?

As New England awaits a final decision from Tom Brady on what he plans to do next season, Belichick is making moves of his own.

For much of this past year rumors have run rampant that Brady would leave Foxborough in favor of either the Los Angeles Chargers or Denver Broncos.

While he has never confirmed the gossip, Brady also did not do much to dissuade it. As such, Belichick has reportedly been preparing for life without the quarterback who helped transform him into the greatest NFL coach of all time.

According to Peter King of NBC Sports, Belichick has very real interest in bringing Andy Dalton on board to serve as New England’s quarterback.

Dalton is currently signed to a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, but the team will likely move him in anticipation of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Bengals are expected to select Joe Burrow out of LSU to be their next franchise quarterback.

“I think Bill Belichick would really like to work with Andy Dalton because Andy Dalton is a football player, you know? He’s not Tom Brady. He’s not gonna go down in the pantheon, I get it,” King said.

“I think Andy Dalton would be a very compelling guy to either be their quarterback for a while or to be their bridge guy to the next quarterback or to take Jarrett Stidham under his wing as Brady did some this year and make the best of Jarrett Stidham for 2021 and beyond.”

Last season Dalton played in 13 outings and recorded 3,494 passing yards and 16 scores. Although he has taken the Bengals to the postseason on several occasions, Dalton has never been able to get past the AFC Wild Card Round.

Obviously that would likely change if he got the opportunity to play for Belichick and the Patriots.

Will Dalton ultimately end up in New England? It depends on what Brady’s decision ends up being. But the interest is definitely there, which means a deal is certainly within the realm of possibility.
