New England Patriots Inching Closer To Signing Marcus Mariota

The New England Patriots are inching closer to signing Marcus Mariota, it would appear.

The Patriots’ quarterback situation is the worst kept secret in the NFL at this point. Tom Brady becomes an unrestricted free agent in mid-March, and at the moment he has given zero in the way of indication that he wants to return.

During an interview this week, ESPN’s Jeff Darlington said in no uncertain terms that he pretty much expects Brady to be gone come next season.

“Tom Brady is currently operating under the belief that he will enter free agency to play somewhere other than New England next season, a sentiment the quarterback has shared with other,” Darlington said.

So how do the Patriots plan on replacing a six-time champion? With Mariota, apparently.

According to Pro Football Network insider Tony Pauline, New England is one of two teams “showing interest” in signing Mariota.

“Keep this in the back of your mind – with all the uncertainty surrounding Tom Brady, the New England Patriots are showing interest in soon to be free agent quarterback Marcus Mariota,” he said.

“The former first-round pick is being courted by several teams who may have an open competition at quarterback. I’m told the Indianapolis Colts have also shown interest in Mariota – just in case.”

Mariota is fresh off losing his gig as the starting quarterback of the Tennessee Titans to Ryan Tannehill, so he is desperately seeking a new situation.

Will the Patriots ultimately be that new situation? Time will tell.
