Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George has a player option for the 2024-25 season. The expectation coming into this year was that he and L.A. would work out a long-term extension at some point, but thus far that hasn’t happened.
As a result, George could opt out and become a free agent this coming summer.
George is putting up 22.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game this year. He is widely considered one of the NBA’s most versatile players on both ends of the court.
If George and the Clippers do opt for a divorce, one frontrunner for his services appears to be emerging.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Philadelphia 76ers are a team to watch when it comes to George.
“League sources say that Philadelphia continues to loom as an eager George suitor should he make it onto the open market and give the 76ers their formal opportunity to try to lure him across the country,” Stein wrote.
“The Sixers are said to maintain interest in George despite the widely held presumption that he and [Kawhi] Leonard want to keep playing together in their native Southern California.”
Complicating matters further is the Clippers’ financial situation.

“The Clippers are deep in the tax and don’t control their own first-round pick through 2030,” John Hollinger of The Athletic wrote recently.
“Their best players are 32, 33 and 34, and they may have no choice but to pay two of them this summer and keep trying to push this rock up the hill. (Keep an eye on Paul George, by the way. Presumably, if there was a max extension sitting around for him, he would have signed it by now; I think it’s fair to say a couple of cap-room teams in the East are, um, ‘monitoring’ this.)”
It will be interesting to see what happens this summer.
Obviously if the Clippers win a championship in 2024, this whole conversation is moot. They will find a way to retain George. Should that not occur, though – it really wouldn’t be all that shocking to see him in a 76ers jersey come next season.
