Donovan Mitchell’s Honest Reaction To Rudy Gobert’s Deal
Rudy Gobert agreed to a five-year, $205 million deal with the Utah Jazz this weekend. As a result, the 28-year-old now holds the honor of having received the richest deal for a center in NBA history, and the third-largest deal of all time.
Only Giannis Antetokounmpo’s five-year, $228 million contract and Russell Westbrook’s $208 million extension signed in 2017 are bigger.
After the details of Gobert’s deal went public, the team’s other big star, Donovan Mitchell, offered his thoughts. Many were curious about his feelings given the friction that existed between him and Gobert late last season.
“I applaud Rudy for showing up every day [and] you wouldn’t be able to tell if the negotiations were going great or if they’re going bad,” Mitchell said.
“Whatever they were, none of us really knew until it happened. And I give him a credit for coming into work straight-faced and ready to go and locked in. … That’s the ultimate pro.”
As far as past beefs, Mitchell maintains those are long behind them.
“[That’s] behind us, that’s past us,” he said.
“It’s crazy to think that this is the same year that this whole thing has happened.”
Gobert, for his past, seems equally thrilled to continue to play alongside Mitchell.
“After the bubble, I really felt like I could win a championship with Donovan,” he said.
“I think we’ve both grown a lot, and we’re going to keep growing. I’m really excited that we’re going to be able to continue this journey together.”

Mitchell signed a five-year, $190 million with the Jazz earlier this offseason.
Now that Utah has its two biggest stars locked up long-term, it will be interesting to see how the team moves forward.
“I believe in this group, I believe in this organization, and that’s why my decision was easy to make. Because that’s where my heart is,” Gobert said.

“Since I got here, I always thought that having a chance to bring a championship to the state of Utah, to the city, and to this organization would be something pretty powerful.”
Will the Jazz be able to make some noise in a very crowded Western Conference next season? Time will tell.
