As the Lakers currently occupy the 10th spot in the Western Conference, the team’s performance without James will be crucial in determining their playoff prospects.
What complicates matters further is that L.A. has several paths forward ahead, but each depends on James.
If James is simply healing and will return to the fold, they can move forward with adding either the veteran point guard they been eyeing, or one of the two big men they have had their eye on.
But if James wants out, then another scenario could make sense. And in that case, Davis would feel the fallout from that as well.
A lot of questions and doubts surround the Lakers right now. Much of that would be resolved with a clear answer from James regarding why precisely he decided to step away from the team.
But thus far, James has remained quiet.
The next few weeks will be interesting. One way or another, the real reason behind James’ exit will come to light. And it does, the Lakers’ short-term plans will likely come into greater focus.
