According to reports, the Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors have agreed to a trade that would send Leonard back to the team that drafted him, in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks. That is a massive haul for the Clippers, and it would completely reshape both franchises.
The problem is that the deal is on hold pending an NBA investigation into whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap. That investigation could stretch into 2027 depending on how the league office chooses to handle it. Until it resolves, no trade happens.
This is a fascinating situation because both sides clearly want the trade to happen. The Clippers are ready to reset and turn their aging roster into a bunch of future assets. The Raptors want to bring Leonard home and pair him with their young core for a legitimate playoff push. But the NBA is not going to let this move happen while there is a cloud over how the Clippers built their current roster in the first place.
The specifics of the investigation have not been fully disclosed, but the general idea is that the league is looking at whether the Clippers used non-basketball payments to keep salaries under the cap.
