Ja Morant Traded to Trail Blazers: Portland Adds All-Star Guard in Blockbuster with Grizzlies
Ja Morant is heading to Portland.
The Trail Blazers acquired the former All-Star guard from the Memphis Grizzlies in a trade that officially ends the Ja Morant era in Memphis and gives Portland a franchise-level talent to build around. It is the kind of move that recasts both teams for the next several seasons.
Start with Portland. The Trail Blazers have been in the middle of a slow, mostly quiet rebuild since Damian Lillard’s departure. They have accumulated young pieces, drafted well, and built a functional roster of players in various stages of development. What they did not have was a real star to organize the whole project around.
Now they do.
Ja Morant, when healthy and locked in, is one of the most exciting players in the NBA. His athleticism is elite. His pick-and-roll passing is elite. His ability to break down a defense off the dribble is elite. He is the kind of player who guarantees you sell out arenas and command national television slots.
The health question is real. Morant has had multiple injury seasons in Memphis, and there have been off-court issues that have gotten in the way of his development. But at 26 years old, he still has a runway to become the player everyone thought he was going to be. Portland is a fresh start with a young roster and less national spotlight, which might be exactly what he needs.
Head coach Chauncey Billups now has a legit lead guard. Scoot Henderson, who has been developing on the roster, can move into a Robin role next to Morant’s Batman. The pieces fit.
For Memphis, this trade closes the book on a chapter that had a lot of highs and a lot of drama. The Morant era in Memphis produced playoff basketball, produced All-NBA seasons, and produced some of the most fun basketball the franchise has ever played. It also produced multiple suspension issues, injury seasons, and an eventual sense that the Grizzlies had gotten as far as they were going to get with this core.
Memphis got real value back in the deal. The Grizzlies front office, which has always been sharp with asset management, turned Morant into future picks and rotation pieces they can build around. That is what a rebuild looks like when it is being done properly.
The Grizzlies still have Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane on the roster. They still have young pieces developing. This is not a full teardown. But it is a directional pivot that lets Memphis start planning for what comes next.
The Western Conference just got even more chaotic.
The Thunder are the defending Western Conference champions and the defending NBA champions. The Nuggets have Nikola Jokic. The Timberwolves are dangerous. The Rockets have Kevin Durant. The Warriors are running it back. The Lakers just got LeBron James in Philadelphia, wait, that is the East. The West is loaded.
Portland is not a top-four team in the West yet. But adding Morant makes them a play-in threat, gives them a real identity, and creates a foundation the front office can build on.
Memphis is going to run its own rebuild with the assets they got back. The Blazers are going to try to make Morant the star they finally have around Henderson and the rest of their young core. Both franchises are betting on the future.
