Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Rumors Heat Up as Lakers Pursue Bucks Star Before NBA Draft

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga is finally reaching crunch time.

Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam is reportedly pushing the front office to get clarity on Giannis before the June 23 NBA Draft, and the Lakers are circling as one of the most aggressive suitors. ESPN’s Shams Charania reports the Lakers can build a package around their No. 25 pick, two unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, and likely a young player or two.

The question is whether that is enough.

Probably not. Milwaukee would be giving up the best player in franchise history for a draft package built around a late first-round pick and two future picks that don’t convey for five and seven years. Even if Giannis is requesting a trade, the Bucks have to extract more than that, or they will be eviscerated by their own fan base.

The hidden Lakers issue is Luka Doncic.

According to reports, Luka has told the Lakers he values the chemistry he has with Austin Reaves and wants that partnership to continue. Reaves is exactly the kind of player Milwaukee would demand in any Giannis package. If Los Angeles parts with him, it strains the relationship with their new franchise leader. If they don’t, they don’t have a real Giannis offer.

That is a brutal corner to be in.

The Knicks are the other team Giannis was reportedly willing to play for outside Milwaukee. But the Knicks are in the NBA Finals right now. The chance that the New York front office blows up a Finals roster days after a championship run, just to swing for Giannis, is close to zero. The Knicks know they have something. They are not breaking it.

Other teams in the mix include the Warriors, Heat, Rockets, and Celtics, all of whom have varying ability to put together a real package. None of them have an obvious Giannis-level haul that Milwaukee would accept.

So what actually happens? The most likely outcome is that nothing gets done before the draft and the conversation extends into July. The Bucks would prefer that any deal includes draft picks and young players that can be cleanly slotted into a rebuild, which is going to take time to construct.

For Lakers fans, the Giannis dream is real but distant. The math doesn’t add up cleanly. The two-time MVP could come west, but getting him without giving up Reaves is going to require creativity, third teams, and a willingness from Milwaukee to take less than they should.

Giannis turns 32 in December. The Bucks are at a fork. Decide soon, or watch the window close.
