Red Sox, Dodgers Mookie Betts Deal Is Complete

The Red Sox, Dodgers Mookie Betts deal is complete, it would appear.

Heading into this week, a trade between the organizations has been described as “inevitable.”

According to The Athletic’s MLB insider Peter Gammons, “three different NL folks today predicted Betts-to-L.A. was ‘inevitable.’”

Boston and Betts avoided arbitration this past month by coming to an agreement on a one-year, $27 million deal.

That said, once the deal is done, Betts is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent and can walk for nothing.

The Red Sox are desperately trying to get under the $208 million luxury ta threshold, so moving Betts is a top priority on the path to that.

“We need to be under the CBT (competitive balance tax),” team owner John Henry told reporters recently.

“That was something we’ve known for more than a year now.”

The Red Sox’s current payroll projection is $221.9 million.

If the organization can dump Betts to the Dodgers without taking back big contracts it would be a huge financial win.

Getting back a few talented young prospects from LA in the deal would just be icing on the cake.

“In the end we take full responsibility for the overall direction of the club,” Henry continued.

“But one of the things that we’ve talked about and I think is apparent is that we need to have more depth in our minor league system.”

Betts was named the AL MVP in 2018 and has earned four consecutive All-Star nods since 2016. He has also amassed four Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers.

Over the last five years, Betts’ WAR is the second best in all of major league baseball.

Adding Betts would also be huge for a Dodgers team that has struck out on all the big moves it attempted to make during the offseason.

A final deal for the trade should be worked out at some point in the next few weeks.
