“I have confirmation from a former Blue Jays player and teammate of Tony Fernandez that he is in fact in critical condition with a kidney issue,” he tweeted out.
“Fernandez is the Jays all-time hits leader & was such a joy to watch offensively & defensively helping lead the franchise to prominence.”
This is not the first time Fernandez has battled kidney issues.
Back in 2017, he was hospitalized with Polycystic Kidney Disease, which is something that happens when cysts develop in your kidneys.
That in turn prevents them from filtering waste products from a person’s blood.
The 57-yetar-old is the Blue Jays’ franchise leader in games played, hits, WAR among position players and defensive WAR.
Over the course of his 18-year professional career, Fernandez played for Toronto on three separate occasions.
Fernandez won Gold Glove awards for four consecutive years with the Blue Jays and was an integral piece in the team’s 1993 World Series-winning squad.
Fernandez retired after the 2001 season after also having played for the San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers.
