The Red Sox are at the center of a sexual assault scandal.
One of two males accused of repeatedly assaulting a teen boy at a detention center in the late 1990s went on to work as a clubhouse attendant for the organization.
The man in question reportedly performed the alleged acts at a New Hampshire youth detention center.
According to the Associated Press, Stephen Murphy was charged with 26 counts of aggravated felonious assault.
The Danvers, Massachusetts, man and another fellow by the name of Jeffrey Buskey reportedly stand accused of assaulting and beating a boy in the Sununu Youth Services Center where they served as counselors.
“When we learned of the allegations against Stephen Murphy involving events that occurred prior to his Red Sox employment, he was suspended without pay from his position,” spokesman Kevin Gregg said in a statement to the AP.
“We will have no further comment going forward.”
Murphy’s attorney, Bruce Kenna, previously said that his client did not know the victim and denies all charges against him.
Rus Rilee, the person representing the accuser, emphasized that his client was the victim of “horrific abuse.”
“My client hopes that, in his role as clubhouse assistant, Mr. Murphy hasn’t had any unsupervised contact with any other adolescent boys,” Rilee said Monday.
It remains unclear what specifically Murphy did while serving as a Red Sox clubhouse attendant. Typically, clubhouse attendants can be tasked with anything and everything related to bringing food for players to packing equipment to laundry.
