McKayla Maroney became an international star in the early 2010s as a member of Team USA’s “Fierce Five” gymnastics team.
Maroney won a gold medal at the team event in London and silver in the vault, but her fame eclipsed her athletic achievements. She immediately became a cultural sensation.
In the years since, Maroney has cultivated a massive and highly-lucrative following online. Although it is unclear whether she is a full-time social media influencer or not at this juncture, she obviously has the fanbase to be one.

Big picture, it’s clear that Maroney is a massive star. And it’s something she deserves a lot of credit for. Her former teammate Aly Raisman’s also at one point attempted to post racy content, but it just didn’t hit the same.
Maroney is a permanent member of the larger sports cultural zeitgeist precisely because she knows what notes to hit.

Given her relevance and continuing popularity, it’s easy to see that Maroney’s claim to fame isn’t going away any time soon. She will be an influencer on social media for as long as she wants to be.
