Lonzo Ball Made More Three-Pointers Than Devin Booker In 2020

Lonzo Ball was a better three-point shooter than Devin Booker this season by any objective measure.

Ball attempted 395 total three-pointers in 2019-20, making 148 of them.

Booker attempted 398 total three-pointers, making 141 of them.

That means despite the fact that Booker attempted more three-pointers, Ball hit more of them and at a better clip — 37.5 percent to 35.4 percent — in seven fewer games played.

Given Ball’s reputation for being a horrendous offensive player and Booker’s standing as a scoring machine, those numbers might surprise some folks.

Of course, context matters.

Booker is constantly the focus of every defense that squares off against the Phoenix Suns. His three-pointers are generally ones he has to create himself off the dribble, and with at least one guy on him.

Ball, meanwhile, is largely viewed as an offensive liability and free to get to the corners at will. This allows him to get off, and subsequently connect on, more uncontested three-pointers.

Still, given the reputations both young players have, one would expect Booker to have the better offensive numbers in every category besides assists. Which of course is the other funny part of all this, since Booker finished with 18 more total assists than Ball this season — 456 to 438 — and just 0.5 fewer per game (7.0 vs. 6.5).
