LeBron James Gets Brutally Honest About DeMar DeRozan

DeMar DeRozan was selected by the Toronto Raptors with the ninth overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. He would go on to spend nine years with the organization, before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs in the Kawhi Leonard deal.

Everyone knows what happened next. After never even making the Finals with DeRozan, the Raptors immediately won a championship with Leonard.

DeRozan has been very blunt about how that whole sequence of events made him feel.

This week, an interesting question popped up on social media: should the Raptors retire DeRozan’s jersey?

One of DeRozan’s contemporaries, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, felt like the answer was pretty obvious.

“THAT’S A REAL QUESTION??? LOL. ABSOLUTELY THEY SHOULD,” James wrote.

DeRozan was a huge fan favorite and a multiple-time All-Star during his Raptors days. Beyond that, he also led the team pretty consistently into the NBA Playoffs. If James wasn’t such a strong presence in the Eastern Conference for most of those years, there’s a fair case to be made that DeRozan could’ve taken the Raptors further into the playoffs than he did.

Based on those qualities alone, it feels like a jersey retirement is inevitable.
