Are the Lakers preparing to make a big trade with the Magic?

Los Angeles has consistently been one of the best teams in the NBA this season. On the year, the Lakers are 28-7 through 35 games and sit comfortably atop the Western Conference.

The big problem facing the organization, though, is that it still has certain weaknesses that will almost certainly be exploited once the postseason rolls around.

One of those weaknesses? A lack of any sort of consistent, play-making point guards on the roster. Rajon Rondo is as close as it gets, and that alone tells you everything you need to know.

According to Sean Deveny of Heavy.com, the Lakers are reportedly looking into making some sort of deal with the Orlando Magic. The trade would center around veteran point guard D.J. Augustin.

Augustin, 32, is averaging 10.6 points and 4.8 assists per outing. He is also a fairly solid career three-point shooter, which would address another big need for LA.

Although the Lakers have been linked to Darren Collison in recent days, it remains to be seen if the former UCLA ultimately decides to come out of retirement. And even if he does, is he really a better option than a guy in Augustin who has been consistently playing and performing all year long?

LA general manager Rob Pelinka has quietly pledged to be aggressive in upgrading the roster before the playoffs roll around. Will that include a trade for Augustin? We will find out at some point between now and February.
